Certification Is Not The Same As Forklift Safety Training.

by Ray Grant

There’s no question that operating a forklift can be dangerous. Forklifts are carefully measured and built to take only so much weight even before they’re ever used.

Forklift vehicles are much harder to operate than cars, given that rear-wheel steering is involved and unlike cars, there is no caster. It requires steering force just to maintain a course going straight ahead.

A forklift is a very unstable means of transporting something. The center of gravity factor must be considered, continually, as the forklift moves constantly and one improper turn could lead to a dangerous tipping accident.

Because thousands of pounds and thousands of dollars (at least) are surely at risk, a forklift operator must know how work the vehicle at all times and be able to transport items safely and promptly. This is where forklift safety training comes in. Because of the importance of safety, forklift operators in the US must be trained and certified.

Certification, however, is not the same as forklift safety training. Before an operator can be certified he must complete a forklift safety training session and an evaluation. An evaluation means hands-on forklift experience. After a forklift operator has completed both the training and evaluation, then he becomes certified.

There are a number of forklift training safety programs and schools that can assist you in becoming certified. Some schools offer not only the training on how to operator a forklift, but the hands-on experience that you will need to pass the evaluation for your certification. Some of these schools will arrange to come to your work place for evaluations.

Some schools offer forklift safety training programs online. You can choose to take and finish the forklift safety training course online then pay to take the evaluation somewhere locally.

You should not operate a forklift without training, and you cannot become certified until you take an evaluation. Some online schools have arrangements made for a local forklift company to give you an evaluation as part of the complete course, while others expect you to take the evaluation on your own.

Most companies have a website set up that explains the specifics of the course they offer. As far as prices go, forklift safety training courses vary in cost, depending on what benefits are included. Some give you only education, others provide instructional videotapes, and others may guarantee certification.

Forklift safety training is a necessity if you are ever going to work with forklifts, whether fulltime or occasionally. Thanks to all of the resources found online, while learning the specifics of forklift safety training may be complex, finding a school to help you is a cinch.
